Gnnther Schlee is Director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology at Halle. Until 1999 he was a Professor at Bielefeld University. His habilitation thesis (Bayreuth 1986) was published as Identities on the Move: Clanship and Pastoralism in Northern Kenya in the series of the International African Institute (1989). At his department, 'Integration and Conflict', he directs research on Africa, Central Asia, and Europe.
