Humanite

The story of humanity is the story of spirit in time interacting with matter in space, beginning with freedom in spirit and moving towards the enrapturement of matter in spirit. The view of rights precipitated by this account of the human condition is distinct both from pragmatism, which Humphrey felt was insufficient to secure a robust agreement on human dignity, and from essentialist philosophies like neo-Thomism, which Humphrey thought were too rigid to respond to the range of particularities present in the world. This understanding of human rights entails a revision of the politics of human rights. Because the interpenetration of the universal into the particular - incarnation - is the starting point for thinking about human rights, the tension between the one and the many is transformed into the starting-point of a dialectic. Rights become more than a mere juridical technique to further particularist political agendas. Rather, they are transformed into a site in which phronesis, or practical judgment, can be exercised and which invites creative expressions of the unspeakable intuition of the spirit, which lurks behind the human rights project.
