"Hilary Llewellyn-Williams'" first book The Tree Calendar (1987) was praised by The Times Literary Supplement as "strongly feminist, erotic, pagan, and anti-authoritarian; this poet seems, excitingly, the genuine thing." This sequence of poems reflects on the Celtic calendar in which each month is represented by a tree. The second collection included here, Book of Shadows (1990), includes a group of poems inspired by the Renaissance philosopher Giordano Bruno; they stand at the interface of nature, mythology, contemporary science, and mysticism. Other lyrics in the collection are hallmarks of this poet's work -- rich, intricate, intense, and full of dazzling imagery.
