Hun King the Ice-Head chronicles the heartbreaking saga of a family trying desperately to reach their loved one, Gary Pender, a 40-something Canadian cynic, as he descends into the clutches of a meth addiction while living 'off the grid' in Phnom Penh. From the time it's discovered by Gary's expat friends that he's been dabbled with meth, Hun King the Ice-Head is narrated through multiple character's perspectives and culminates a year later, when Gary's family is left with no other choice but to fly halfway around the world from Canada to Cambodia in an effort to save him. What the Pender's are confronted by when they get to Phnom Penh is a loved one who's been transformed into a mad, depraved junkie that's lost everything. They feed him and offer to take him home, but in return Gary is manipulative and seethes with rage when they refuse to give him cash to buy more meth. Completely detached from reason, on the verge of either death or insanity, Gary refuses to acknowledge the obvious, fighting every effort his family makes to get through to him. It's late at night. Gary and his brother are standing in an empty street. The two normally stoic men cry as Gary demands cash from his brother, who in turn holds out a plane ticket and begs Gary to come home. A life stands in the balance. Will Gary see beyond his demons and embrace his family's helpful hand, or is it already too late?
