The book forms part of the Evergetis Project which aims to investigate all surviving records of the Theotokos Evergetis Monastery in Constantinople. It provides an up-dated English translation of the Hypotyposis (foundation document) of the Evergetis Monastery, together with full notes and a substantial introduction dealing with the historical significance of the house and its important place in the history of Byzantine monasticism. It challenges accepted views on the authorship of the Hypotyposis, usually attributed to Timothy, the second founder, using linguistic analysis to suggest that traces of the original document by Paul Evergetinos may in fact be identified. It also analyses and attempts to date later accretions to the original 11th-century text. The Hypotyposis was widely used as a model for later Byzantine and Slavonic typika; the precise relationship of these documents one to the other is discussed in detail. The prosopographical information contained in the document is discussed in two substantial Appendices, which draw upon recent advances in this field such as the Prosopography of the Byzantine World. The volume also includes English translations of hitherto untranslated documents associated with the Evergetis in the 13th and 14th centuries. It will provide a companion volume to the Synaxarion of the Evergetis (the liturgical instructions), also edited and translated by R.H. Jordan (3 vols. Belfast, 2000-7).
