This volume was inspired by the stimulation and insights gained over the years from conversations among independent consultants at the annual conferences of the American Evaluation Association (AEA)-conversations not just about evaluation projects but also about the business side of consulting and the shared issues and concerns that independent consultants face. It explores the ways in which these evaluators think about, approach, and implement evaluation and how that differs from those of evaluators in other contexts. The issue showcases recent initiatives of AEA's Independent Consulting Topical Interest Group and examines topics unique to independent consulting, representing the day-to-day realities for these evaluators, and highlighting different challenges and issues that may span the consultant's life cycle: from novice to intermediate to long-term practitioner. There has never before been a compilation that addresses these issues.
