The purpose of this resource is to provide educators with classroom tested lessons that allow students to investigate mathematics from playing common video games. Games in all forms, electronic or not, can provide intrinsic motivation as a part of the learning environment. Internal motivation and the learning context are central to education, particularly in learning mathematics (NCTM, 2000; Ma, Xin, Kashor, & Nand, 1997; Sedig, 2008). Research supports the belief that games and the "act of play" have a positive effect on student motivation and retention of knowledge than conventional instruction. However, it is important to recognize that motivation along is not enough for effective learning (Sedig, 2008). This book consists of six lessons using the game Wii Sports(r) as a data collection source. Students will complete activities based on game play and answer a series of mathematical questions based on the data collected. Teachers are provided with suggestions for incorporating graphing calculators, computer software, and internet resources into the lessons. Additionally, multiple choice assessments accompany the lessons.
