Israeli-Egyptian Relations, 1980-2000

A memoir by former diplomat Ephraim Dowek which provides a comprehensive study of the relations between Egypt and Israel from peace until the present day. This is an informative account of the author's time in Egypt as a high-level Israeli diplomat (he was eventually appointed Ambassador) and as a senior participant in a vital and important aspect of Arab-Israeli relations in the modern era, providing a personal insight into the period when Egypt and Israel entered into an era of peace.

Ephraim Dowek was born in Cairo, Egypt, and immigrated to Israel in 1949 with its inception. He was amongst the founders of a Kibbutz on the Gaza border, but later he transferred to the development town of Beit Shaan and became its first Mayor at the age of 25. He occupied concurrently various national political positions and in 1963 was appointed ambassador to Chad and joined the Diplomatic Service on a permanent basis. He served in various important diplomatic positions both in Israel and abroad: Ambassador to the UN in Geneva and later in New York; Ambassador to Egypt; First Ambassador to India and Head of the Israeli International Cooperation. He also had a short political interlude during which he served as Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem. In 1996, he retired from the Foreign Ministry and he is presently active as a business consultant and serving on the boards of various voluntary organizations
