This book examines Israel's strategic and military challenges in the Middle East, especially with regard to Syria and Iran, highlighting the relevance of past lessons from both the Cold War and the Arab-Israeli conflict. Ehud Eilam analyzes Israel's position toward Iran's nuclear project, the relationship between Israel and the United States, the struggle over the Golan Heights, and Israel's maneuvering between Hamas and the Palestinian authority. Other chapters examine the implications of the unrest in Egypt, the war in Libya, and the war in Syria, including Syria's chemical weapons program.

Ehud Eilam has been studying Israel's national security strategy and military doctrine for more than twenty years. He received his PhD in this field in 2004. Over the years, he has worked as a researcher for Israel's Ministry of Defense and an instructor at IDF Command and General Staff College, Israel. He now resides in the USA.
