The publication of the Triumphe de Temperance brings to an end the edition of the Triumphe des Vertuz, the monumental work on the cardinal virtues written by the 'rhetoriqueur' Jean Thenaud between 1508 and 1518 (see for the first three volumes Triumphe de Prudence, TLF 489, Triumphe de Force, TLF 550, Triumphe de Justice, TLF 589). The work as a whole was meant as a miroir des princes, and was presented to the king of France Francois I (1515-1547). In this fourth and last part, the author describes the qualities young women of noble birth, lead by the queen, should display. In the epilogue, the editors stress the encyclopedic character of the four parts and the wealth of subjects treated by Jean Thenaud that allow us a memorable insight into the likely interests of the court of the early sixteenth century.
