Focusing on a crucial yet neglected aspect of early modern writing, this new study revaluates English Renaissance poems in light of the challenges posed to the epic by a newly popular type of printed text: the historical epitome. The relationship between the epic and the epitome is investigated in a variety of texts including The Faerie Queene, John Stow's chronicle summaries, English adaptations of The Divine Weekes and Workes, Cowley's Davideis, and Paradise Lost.
