John Bull

George Colman (the Younger) was an English author born in 1762. The Female Dramatist was his first play. Colman was also the author of poetry much of which was considered coarse. John Bull: The Englishman's Fireside is a comedy in five acts. This is Colman's best work and very humorous. John Bull is a national personification of England, originated by Dr. John Arbuthnot in 1712. John Bull is a common man who is usually portrayed as a stout, portly man with a middle class identity.
