Ka Taoka Hakena Treasures from the Hockec Collection

Published to celebrate the centenary of its foundation, this book introduces and samples the Hocken Library's principal collections. There are many outstanding items in these collections, including significant holdings of twentieth-century New Zealand art, early New Zealand manuscripts, maps and publications, early Australian manuscripts and many other items of great interest. Designed to illustrate the richness of these collections, the book also stands as a tribute to the many benefactors, beginning with Dr T M Hocken at the end of the 19th century, who have the endowed the Hocken. Stuart Strachan, who trained as an archivist, has been Hocken Librarian since 1985, having first worked at the Library from 1968 to 1977. He is currently an inaugural member of the Archives Council of New Zealand. Educated as an art historian, Linda Tyler was Curator of the Pictorial Collections at the Hocken Library from 1998 to 2006. She is now Director of the Centre for New Zealand Art Research and Discovery, University of Auckland.
