After the public outcry - including that of the mother of Conan Doyle - against the death of Sherlock Holmes, the detective is "resuscitated": "I owe you many apologies, my dear Watson, but it was all-important that it should be thought I was dead." And, of course, we all forgive him as his presence serves as an antidote to tedium. Sure, the shadow of his supposed death hangs over The Return of Sherlock Holmes, but neither the characters nor the readers have time to think too much about it as new cases emerge. Cryptograms, more specialized studies, more astute adversaries, and women, those astonishing women - "Their most trivial action may mean volumes, or their most extraordinary conduct may depend upon a hairpin or a curling tongs" - form part of Holmes' much demanded and satisfactory return.
