The novelist Mrs. Humphrey Ward (Mary Arnold Ward), was the niece of the poet Matthew Arnold, and granddaughter of Dr. Thomas Arnold, the headmaster of Rugby School who was immortalized as a character in the novel Tom Brown's Schooldays.
