On Language And Sexual Politics

Since the mid-1970s there has been an intense interest in the relationshio between language, gender and power. Both inside and outside the academy there has been debate on whether men and women use language differently (and what it means if they do); whether sexism is built into languages (and whether changing language changes attitudes); and how our understanding of men and women and their place in the world is affected by the way they are represented in the mass media. In this book, Deborah Cameron, a leading feminist linguist, examines the sexual politics of language - the way we use it, the things we believe about it, and the picture of the world we construct with it.
