Using first-person narratives, collected through oral history interviews, the book emphasizes women's role in their families and communities, treating women as important actors in the economic, social, cultural, and political life of the segregated South. Anne Valk is Associate Director for Programs of the John Nicholas Brown Center, Brown University. She is the author of Radical Sisters: Second-Wave Feminism and Black Liberation in Washington, D.C. Leslie Brown is Assistant Professor of History at Williams College, and the author of Upbuilding Black Durham. From 1990-1996, Valk and Brown served as Research Coordinators for the Behind the Veil project.
