Lost in the Dream of Old Man Coyote is the story of SteptoeLightfield, a young poetic prodigy raised by a Northwestlogging family and mentored in the "old ways" by a NativeAmerican elder. After high school Step joins the U.S. Armyand participates in the Gulf War until he is discharged witha head injury. He then returns to the isolation of his nativehigh country, living on The River of No Return as a hermit,reading endlessly, and making Zen ceremonial tea bowlsin an attempt to heal himself. Forced by a flash flood toreturn to civilization, Step decides to take a vision queston an old motorcycle in search of "the lost connectionbetween man and his own wondrous life" and to "find thesacred glue with which to mend our broken world."Come with Step as he rides out of the high country,through the western United States and into Mexico.Be there as he stops to visit "love's ground zero," at abordello in northern Nevada, then sleeps under busheswith Berkeley's street people before confronting SouthernCalifornia's high- tech culture, crowded byways, andconspicuous materialism.
