It is June 1923-the dawning of a new riverboat season on the Mississippi river-and Noble Prince's Red-Hot Rhythm Band has snagged a prized gig on the Morning Queen.Widowed seamstress Vivienne Malreaux is a striking Creole woman who is worried about her son, Victor, a gifted trumpet player in Prince's band. He has been drinking of late and when she finally convinces him to leave the band and pursue a career in medicine, Noble is extremely angry. But when Vivienne comes to pick up Victor from the riverboat, Noble's irritation is soon overshadowed by an undeniable physical attraction to the gorgeous woman with flowing black hair.
