The classic play about Sir Thomas More, the Lord chancellor who refused to compromise and was executed by Henry VIII.
Robert Bolt was born in Manchester, England, and attended the Grammar School and University there. He served three years in the Army and Air Force before trying his hand as a playwright. His first work was a Christmas invention for village children, for whom he could find nothing suitable already in print. He was still teaching at Mill-field School when his first play, Flowering Cherry, starring Ralph Richardson, was presented in London. It played for a year and its success led Mr. Bolt to renounce the classroom for the stage.
