Alice Harriman (1861-1925) was born in Newport, Maine, the daughter of James and Mary E. (Ladd) Harriman. She graduated from Newport High School. She was a Christian Scientist, a teacher of writing, and a translator. She was also an author and probably the first woman publisher in her country. From 1896 on she wrote short stories and articles for magazines. Many of these were about her early years in Montana. She travelled for Northwest Magazine, 1897-1902. At some point in her writing career she used the pseudonym John Ryce. Her works include: Songs o' the Sound (1906), Chaperoning Adrienne (1907), Songs o' the Olympics (1909), A Man of Two Countries (1910) and Wilt Thou Not Sing? (1912).
