1895. Caine, an English novelist, was the secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He lived with him from until the poet's death and then wrote Recollections of Rossetti. His enormously popular novels, some of Manx life, others on biblical themes, include The Shadow of a Crime, The Deemster, The Manxman, The Christian, The Prodigal Son, and The Master of Man. In The Manxman a poor fisherman Pete falls in love with Kate, the daughter of a landlord on Man island. Pete goes off to sea to earn enough money to marry Kate. Before he leaves Pete asks his friend Philip to keep an eye on Kate. But, unbeknownst to Pete, the Philip is also in love with Kate. Then they receive word that Pete's ship has gone down, so Philip and Kate are now free to plan their wedding. Just one catch; Pete's not dead.
