Marc-Antoine Muret (1526-1585) was a well-known orator in the papal court, an eminent teacher, and a rigorous philologist, who strove patiently to publicize original texts. His collection of the Juvenilia was published in 1552, at a time when the young man moved in the circles of the Pleiades Poets. The collection consists of a tragedy,Julius Caesar, ten elegies, two satires, seven hundred epigrams, three epistles and six odes, and presents generic samples which illustrate the preoccupations of the contemporary poetic arts. Attesting to Muret's pedagogical skills, this early work reflects both the aspirations of the new poetic generation and contemporary ethical debates. Virginie Leroux presents this annotated edition with a French translation in which each genre is revised, classical sources and theoretical models identified. The influence of contemporary emulation is analyzed, and followed by the study of the polemical entailments of the poet's belonging to a specific community.
