Doepke There may be no personal relationship more complicated than the one between a mother and daughter, but with Maria not surprisingly their's is strained from the start and builds to a tension so taunt that any resemlance of family love and respect is at best frazzled and thread worn. Maria reaches out to others for friendship and support while trying to find meaning and purpose for her existence. Not only does she struggle with her own identity, but must also battle the forces of addiction, a broken relationship with her boyfriend, an out of wedlock pregnancy, and a battle for her rights to keep her child. Only with the help of her teacher and priest does she find some assemblance of happyness, but even that teeters on a knife edge.
