The fascinating biography of Peter Spencer (1782-1843) who was the most important leader of the Union Church of African Members, the first body of African Methodists to win unconditional independence from white Methodism. Born a slave, Spencer migrated to Wilmington, Delaware, joined the mostly white Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, attended a Quaker school, and soon became the recognized leader of the black people of Delaware.
