The purpose of this book is to support and improve the image of the 12 Step Program from the medical point of view; as well as to increase the knowledge about this illness. My expectation is that this book will be useful to anyone who has at least 90 days of sobriety -- and is on the right path to rehabilitation -- as well as those who already have several years in the 12 Step Program. I am aware that I'm getting into a topic that for many "old generals" of the 12 Step Program should not be touched by doctors -- almost as if it were a taboo. But as I mentioned at the beginning of this book, it is important that doctors continue to promote and endorse the 12 Step Program. I will describe the illness of addiction from a medical perspective and show how it is present in the Big Book in colloquial language, thus upholding the understanding that those in A.A. are undergoing a real treatment based on clinical practices- The prejudices and misunderstandings around the program can only be dispelled when the fellow members of A.A. and the medical doctors specialized in addiction work in concert. The program is relevant despite changing times -- we just have to keep giving it the medical validity that it deserves.
