Martin A. Finkel, DO, FACOP, FAAP, is a professor of pediatrics and the medical director and cofounder of the Child Abuse Research Education Service (CARES) Institute at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey's School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr Finkel is an internationally recognized authority on the medical evaluation and treatment of the child alleged to have been sexually abused. Dr Finkel has been instrumental in developing New Jersey's statewide network of regional child abuse diagnostic and treatment centers. He is the author of the first scientific paper published in the medical literature on the healing and interpretation of acute genital and anal trauma and the first paper in the literature on signs and symptoms associated with genital contact in girls. He has published numerous articles, authored chapters, and coedited 2 previous editions of this textbook on the medical evaluation of the sexually abused child. Angelo P. Giardino, MD, PhD, MPH, FAAP, is the medical director of Texas Children's Health Plan, a clinical associate professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, and an attending physician on both the Texas Children's Hospital Child Protection Team and the forensic pediatrics service at the Children's Assessment Center in Houston, TX. In addition, Dr Giardino serves as the physician advisor to the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Childhood Injury Prevention. His academic accomplishments include published articles and textbooks on child abuse and neglect, contributions to several national curricula on the evaluation of child maltreatment, presentations on a variety of pediatric topics at both national and regional conferences and, most recently, completion of a 3-year term on the National Review Board (NRB) for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, where he advised on how best to protect children from sexual abuse. While on the NRB, Dr Giardino served as the chair for its Research Committee. Currently, Dr Giardino serves on the national board of directors for Justice for Children.
