County Dublin is derived from the Irish name Dubh Linn, meaning "black pool" but the common name for the city in modern Irish is Baile #xC3;tha Cliath meaning "town of the hurdled ford". The rich fertile plains in the north of the county and the well drained valleys of the south meant it was an attractive place for early humans.
