Memories of the Maghreb Transnational Identities in Spanish Cultural Production

Memories of the Maghreb explores how the Spanish colonization of North Africa at the turn of the twentieth century continues to haunt Spain's efforts to articulate a national identity that can accommodate both the country's diversity, brought about by immigration from its old colonies, and the postnational demands of its integration in the European Union. Campoy-Cubillo analyzes Spanish contemporary cultural production of the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco, following a cultural studies approach to describe the material conditions that contributed to the development of Spanish colonial discourse and its rearticulation in contemporary Spain.

Adolfo Campoy-Cubillo is an assistant professor of Spanish at Oakland University. His research interests include Spanish postcolonial studies, feminism, and comparative literature. His article "La literatura postcolonial española del Maghreb" appeared in Contornos de la narrativa española actual (2000-2010) (2010). He has published critical readings of Spanish peninsular literature as well as translations of literary theory and literature.
