In 2003, R. Larry Todd?s biography, Mendelssohn: A Life in Music , was published to near universal acclaim. It was immediately hailed as the definitive biography of this important composer. In researching Mendelssohn?s life over the last two and a half decades, Todd uncovered much new information about the composer, his family, and his peers. Not all of this material would fit within the confines of a critical biography, so he has presented these findings in academic papers and lectures which themselves have been eagerly followed by students of 19 th century music. Now, Todd has gathered these essays?many previously unpublished or enlarged and revised from their original publication?in what is sure to be a standard volume in Mendelssohn studies.
