The Men's Share?: Masculinities, Male Support and Women's Suffrage in Britain, 1890-1920

Drawing on a wide range of sources such as newspapers, diaries, letters and speeches,The Men's Shareoffers new insights into the women's suffrage movement in Britain. Through a study of the language and ideas of male suffragists, the authors outline the transformations in masculine identities and concepts of masculinity. Reactions to militancy, the Pethick-Lawrences and the impact of war are all considered by the contributors to this volume. The Men's Sharedemonstrates that male support for the women's suffrage movement was both extensive and diverse. At the same time, the authors highlight the equivocal nature of much of this support and the reluctance of many male activists to challenge their own masculinity.
