The Modern Theologians Reader will be an accompaniment to the third edition of The Modern Theologians (ed. David F. Ford with Rachel Muers), designed to follow the latter closely in length and structure. As well as standing on its own as a wide-ranging and enjoyable sampler of modern theology, the Reader will make the main volume even more useful as a class textbook, enabling students and teachers conveniently to study appropriate primary texts in tandem with their reading of the main volume's commentary. We therefore expect not only that it will sell well on the coat-tails of the main volume, but that because the two volumes together are an even richer and more useful resource than either on its own, it will increase sales of the main volume. Key features The Reader's key features will be: 'ˆ— Convenience: it will collect a wide range of primary source materials in one volume; 'ˆ— Pedagogical richness: it will allow students and teachers to combine their study of the commentaries in the main volume with their own scrutiny of texts on which those commentaries are based; and 'ˆ— Ease of use: provide introductory notes and annotations to each extract to help students understand the relevance and importance of each extract; A general introduction will set out the relationship of the Reader to the main volume, and will also provide a guide to reading primary texts: some tips and ideas for how to study the materials in the rest of the book. Each extract will be prefaced by a few lines which explain where the text is from and why it has been included. Footnotes will be used to point out important features and explain particularly difficult points, and key words will be linked to a glossary at the end of the volume.Structure For each chapter of the main volume, we will provide a small number of extracts from the relevant modern theologian or theologians, chosen in order to demonstrate how the key themes discussed in that chapter are played out in detail in the primary source materials.
