The final of three volumes, this book completes the official list of all approximately 56,120 living and 14,700 fossil species of New Zealand's animal, plant, fungi, and micro-organism populations. Featuring photographs and illustrations, this account demonstrates the value and benefits of taxonomic research in New Zealand and its applications to science, biotechnology, conservation, and biosecurity. The project is the first of its kind, as no other country has compiled a checklist of its entire biota.

Dennis P. Gordon is a principal scientist at the National Institute of Water & Atmospheric Research, where he has led a marine biodiversity research group for more than 13 years. He also serves on the international teams that are respectively coordinating the production of the Catalogue of Life and the World Register of Marine Species. He is the author of first two volumes of New Zealand Inventory of Biodiversity.
