Non-State Threats and Future Wars

The intent behind this book was to bring together a team of defence and national security scholars and real-world military and law enforcement operators to focus on the topic of "Non-State Threats and Future Wars". The book is divided into four main sections: The first concerns theory. The second section concerns non-state threats and case studies, providing an overview of non-state threats ranging from organized crime networks to cartels, gangs and warlords. The third section is based on counter-OPFOR (opposing force) strategies which detail advanced concepts, urban battlespace environmental perceptions, weaponry, intelligence preparation, networked force structure and C41. The fourth and final section contains an archival document from the late 1987 period concerning early Fourth Epoch War theory, and never before published interviews with Chechen commanders and officers who participated in combat operations against Russian forces in the 1994-96 war.

Professor Robert J. Bunker is a counter-terrorism and less-than-lethal weapons consultant to the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center-West. He is also an Adjunct Professor, National Security Studies program, California State University, San Bernardino and past Fellow, Institute of Land Warfare, Association of the United States Army. He holds a PhD in politcal science from the Claremont Graduate University, California, and has counter-terrorism operational planning experience. His research focus is on non-state threats, emerging forms of warfare, advanced weaponry and CONOPS (concepts of operations), and counter-OPFOR (opposition forces) strategies. Dr Bunker has written over 100 works and essays for policy, military, and law enforcement publications including Parameters, Terrorism and Political Violence, Special Warfare, and The Tactical Edge. He is the editor and author of a series of booklets for law enforcement use, and has spoken on his research throughout the US and overseas. His most recent works are book chapters focusing on networked threats and their operational advantages in Swedish and Indian publications, and a International Association of Chiefs of Police Training Key on laser threats to law enforcement
