As an adolescent, she visited Miami Beach with her aunt and uncle andwas confronted by the sensation of not belonging; as a young woman in Rome, she was made to ponder the difference between innocence and ignorance; a trip to Jamaica brought her face to face with acute political and social unrest and, on a family trip to Montreal, she watched her daughters make their own startling realisations.

Lynne Sharon Schwartz has published critically acclaimed fiction, nonfiction, essays, poetry, and translations from Italian. She has won fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the New York State Foundation for the Arts. She lives in New York.
