Daniel Ponce de Leon is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. After graduating in 2010 from La Mirada High School in Southern California, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays. He attended the University of Arizona on a baseball scholarship, and played one season in Tucson with the Wildcats before transferring to Cypress Junior College. Following the 2012 season, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds but decided to instead transfer to the University of Houston, where he won 7 games in 2013. He was then drafted for the third time in 2013, this time by the Chicago Cubs, but instead attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he won 9 games in 2014. After that season, he was drafted for the fourth time by the Cardinals. In May of 2017, while pitching for the Memphis Redbirds against the Iowa Cubs, Daniel was struck in the head by a line drive. He suffered a large epidural hematoma and skull fracture that resulted in brain swelling and hemorrhaging. After almost three weeks in the intensive care unit of a Des Moines hospital, he was released and returned home to Florida to recover. Just 14 months later, he was healthy and healed, and the Cardinals called him up from the minors to make his Major League debut on July 23, 2018. In this game, Daniel became just the fifth pitcher in modern Major League history to throw seven innings of no-hit ball in his MLB debut. Media outlets such as CNN, ESPN, Fox, USA Today, The Dan Patrick Show, and many others shared the miraculous story of his recovery and magical debut. MLB.com referred to Daniel's performance as "the second greatest debut in Major League Baseball history."A devout Christian and faith-driven family man, Daniel and his wife, Jenn, spend their offseason in their home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. They have two young children.
