Peacekeeping Intelligence: New Players, Extended Boundaries

This book is an edited collection of essays on the emerging new form of intelligence known as Peacekeeping Intelligence [PKI]. This is the based on predominantly open sources of information used to create Open Source Intelligence [OSINT], and it demands multi-lateral sharing of intelligence at all levels. Unlike national intelligence, which emphasizes spies, satellites and secrecy, Peacekeeping Intelligence brings together many aspects of intelligence gathering, including the media and NGOs. It seeks to establish standards in open source collection, analysis, security and counterintelligence and training, and produces unclassified intelligence useful to the public. The challenges it faces are increasingly entwined with arms control, commercial interests, international crime and ethnic conflict. This volume evaluates the role and dynamics of intelligence in peacekeeping activities as well as the challenges, and considers the intelligence role of coalition forces, law enforcement agencies, developmentinstitutions and NGOs that have become important in peace-support operations.
