Pedagogies of Difference: Rethinking Education for Social Justice

Many critical pedagogies aim to create conditions necessary for equity and social justice by focusing on difference as a central concept in educational reform. Yet selecting one type of difference as a focal point in teaching can easily give rise to the problem of competing distinctions, privileging one type of difference and marginalizing another. In this volume, the editor has assembled an internationally acclaimed group of theorists and educational practitioners whose essays articulate pedagogies of difference. These essays strive to bridge competing discourses of difference in order to create a more inclusive pedagogy of difference that adheres to principles of educational equity and education for social justice. The essays in this volume cover the spectrum of difference-oriented pedagogy, including feminist, anti-racist, lesbian, gay and critical pedagogy.
