The Republic was likely composed during the 370s BC. The first sections of the work have been comparatively neglected by commentators, and a substantial English edition of this important part of the longer work is well overdue. This part of the dialogue is of particular importance in that it presents the parameters of the argument for and against justice in the state and the individual, which Socrates is called on to address - why act justly rather than enjoy all the apparent advantages of injustice? This is the question that the remainder of the Republic endeavours to answer.
