Poems to a Glass Woman

The previously unpublished poems in this collection record the immediate impact of James K. Baxter’s first serious love affair. It was a relationship that affected him profoundly and to which he returned time and time again in his later work. Poems to a Glass Woman is published for the 40th anniversary of Baxter’s death. It includes a biographical essay by the editor, John Weir—a close friend and confidant of Baxter, who has been the editor of the major editions of the poet’s work.

James K. Baxter, one of New Zealand’s finest poets and most controversial figures, was a dramatist, literary critic, and social commentator intimately involved in the social process. Known for his barefoot and bearded appearance, he was often at odds with a society unable to face its disturbing reflection in his work. He died in 1972. John Weir is a Catholic priest and was a close friend of James Baxter.
