A completely new examination of mid-seventeenth-century verse from the British Islands, this work questions and discards the old label "Cavalier Poetry" and argues for a literary interpretation that demonstrates the verse as a canon rich in tumultuous, pluralistic, and radical writing.

In this list of contents, titles of poems generally follow those in the MS or edition chosen as copy-text, with the exception that, words in upper case are given as lower. No attempt has been made to reproduce the often very complex lineation given to titles in the printed sources. When poems have been given titles from their first lines, the punctuation at the end of the line has been ignored. Titles which have been supplied from first lines, and titles of works from which extracts have been taken are placed within square brackets. Poems of uncertain authorship, and reworkings and parodies of existing material are indicated by placing the most probable authorial name within square brackets, qualified either with a question mark for uncertain attributions or with `rev.' for appropriations or adaptations of earlier texts.
