Nellie McClung was a Canadian feminist, politician, and social activist. She was part of the social and moral reform movements prevalent in Western Canada in the early 1900s. McClung was an effective speaker known for her sense of humor. She championed the causes of temperance and suffrage. She saw World War 1 as beneficial to suffrage in that women were joining the work force and changing the image of women. The Pearlie Watson trilogy consists of Sowing Seeds in Danny, The Second Chance, and Purple Springs. The stories follow a reform minded girl from a poor life in Millford to her teen years on a farm and finally to her life as a suffrage and temperance reformer.
