The Question of Dependency and Economic Development is the first empirical study of the relationship between economic development in Third World countries and physical quality of life. The data covers three decades of observation and over eighty lesser developed countries in Africa, South America, and the Middle East. Brian R. Farmer presents his findings in digestible tables and charts and provides clear analysis. He points readers to numerous other works on the subject, giving a thorough review of dependency and other development literature.

Farmer concludes that economic dependency does not appear to pede economic development; his book thus falls within the "modernization" school of economic development.
