At 9 years old, Michael Anthony is thrust into a new life after his adoptive parents decide he doesn't fit their family. Angry and confused, he struggles to adjust to the Nelsons, where he is now a middle child. New school bullies, a crush on his teacher, and longing for his birth mother complicate his journey. Determined to find his place, Michael Anthony tracks down his birth mother, Antoinette, only to face unexpected realities, including the presence of her abusive partner, Big Earl. With the Nelsons stepping in to protect him and his family, Michael Anthony starts to embrace the idea of a stable home. Virginia Giannotta holds a B.A. in English from the College of William and Mary and a PhD in Child Development/Higher Education from the University of Pittsburgh. A former Peace Corps volunteer, teacher, and adoption caseworker, her passion for writing began in childhood. Her book Raising Myself explores lessons from older child adoptions. Now retired, she writes with MadWomen in the Attic and lives in Pittsburgh, enjoying her garden and park walks with Jasper, her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
