Rance Winslow was a sheriff, Indian fighter and cowboy. In 1874 Rance is feeling old, he's ready to settle down and live out his remaining years in peace and quiet on a small ranch in Montana Territory. He makes one last journey to Texas to gather up his mother and daughter, intending to take them with him to Montana Territory. In Texas he learns that his mother is dead and his daughter is married and has moved to San Francisco. After putting flowers on his mother's grave and sending a letter to his daughter, he points his big sorrel North and rides off into the sunset. The only thing between him and his dream of an easy future is 1,500 miles of wild country and men who want him dead!
