Produced in close collaboration with the artist, the book surveys the entirety of the artist's rich career, including many unpublished works. The book opens with the earliest work--his highly influential album covers and posters for the California punk band Black Flag. In addition to the work for Black Flag, the book includes many excerpts from his most important zines. The selection of drawings featured in the book is expansive, including his important surfing drawings, his early work influenced by noir fiction, and his controversial political work. Robert Storr addresses the import Pettibon's work overall. Mike Kelley--longtime friend and fellow Californian--provides an interview with the artist where they describe their working process and various recurring themes in the work. Jonathan Lethem contributes a work of fiction that Pettibon will illustrate. Kitty Scott considers the use of cats in a series of works and how that dovetails with art historical precedents. Byron Coley attends to the early work--his album covers and his zines.
