Continues the conversation the author began with The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child, which presented an authentic picture of a free-choice reading workshop classroom. This book will address the more practical aspects of running a classroom that allows for free-choice reading, including lesson plans, management tools, resources, and tips for working with students who still won't read. Presents advice and strategies on how to encourage and assess 8 lifelong reading habits: 1. dedicating time for reading, 2. self-selecting reading material, 3. sharing books and reading experiences with other readers, 4. planning for future reading, 5. responding authentically to text, 6. showing preferences for genres, authors, and books, 7. valuing reading as a leisure activity, and 8. defining oneself as a reader.

Donalyn Miller, known as "The Book Whisperer" for her insightful advice on what students like to read and how to foster independent reading, teaches language arts and social studies at Peterson Elementary in Fort Worth, Texas.

Susan Kelley has taught reading for over thirty years and currently teaches language arts and social studies at Trinity Meadows Intermediate in Keller, Texas.
