Reclaiming the Desert: Towards a Sustainable Environment in Arid Lands: Proceedings of the Third Joint UAE-Japan Symposium on Sustainable GCC Environment and Water Resources (EWR2006), 30 January - 1 February 2006, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

For the past 13 years, the Japan Cooperation Center, Petroleum (JCCP, previously PEC), has organized symposia which seek to promote the enhancement of desert environments, focusing particularly on the cultivation of vegetation, also known as desert greening. These symposia have been held in various countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), such as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Sultanate of Oman and the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as in Japan, and have attracted considerable interest from scientists and professionals in these countries. The symposia provide opportunities for exchanging views and information on a multitude of issues ranging from the purification, usage and management of water, to desert greening. With a better understanding of the environment, it is hoped that the desert can be rehabilitated through the utilization and application of innovative technologies.
