New edition: A new afterword considers Ali and his legacy in light of the war on terror and new connotations of Islam and the West.
Mike Marqusee was born in the United States, but moved to Britain in 1971, at the age of eighteen. He is the author of several path-breaking books on the politics of modern sport. These include Anyone Sut England, a study of race, class and nationality in cricket, which caused a furore on its publication in 1994 and won the Aberdare Literary Prize from the British Society of Sports History, and War Minus the Shooting, a riveting account of the controversy-shrouded cricket World Cup held in South Asia in 1996. He was recently appointed the first-ever Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Sport Development Research at Roehampton Institute.
