Illustrated with contemporary photographs and documents, Revolution examines 17 key movements of the twentieth century, from the 1917 October Revolution that overthrew Russia’s Tsar to the revolts that hastened the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 1980s. It encompasses the anti-imperialist insurrections that swept through Latin America, Africa, and Asia after the end of the Second World War, as well as the democratic uprisings that overthrew a string of dictatorships; feature boxes examine the role played by such powerful leaders as Lenin, Mao, and Castro. Fifteen items of memorabilia include propaganda posters, proclamations, and correspondence, as well as reports from the front line.

Philip Parker studied History at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, and International Relations at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna, before working in the British Diplomatic Service.
